Residential Courses

David Brown conducts a number of residential courses throughout the year at various centres. All are suitable for beginners or those with previous knowledge.

Each course includes:
  • Illustrated talks with slides.
  • Help on identification, methods of observation and recording Lepidoptera.
  • A study of life histories, habitats etc.
  • Daytime walks in the countryside in a variety of habitats to observe day-flying moths and butterflies.
  • Observation lights operated at night to attract a variety of moths for study prior to release. 
  • Introduction to good quality local pubs!
BUTTERFLIES AND MOTH

SCOTLAND Kindrogan Field Centre, Perthshire

A comfortable Victorian house set in a beautiful highland glen and surrounded by ancient woodland. Electric observation lights will be operated from the centre to attract a variety of moths and
there will be daytime visits to study the Highland Specialities, Rannoch Sprawler, Rannoch Brindled Beauty, in April and Scotch Argus, Plain Clay and Cousin German in August.

LAKE DISTRICT, BLENCATHRA

This centre occupies a dramatic setting at 300m on a south facing slope of Blencathra near Keswick. Observation lights will be operated in the grounds and also at Witherslack near Grange over Sands. There will be excursions to see Marsh Fritillary, Pearl Bordered and Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillary and Duke of Burgundy Fritillary.

WALES Snowdonia National Park centre

A beautiful mansion set in wooded hillsides near Snowdon - an excellent location for butterflies and moths.

SOMERSET Halsway Manor

A delightful Tudor manor house which nestles in the western folds of the Quantock Hills and has magnificent views across Exmoor. Electric light traps will be operated in the wooded grounds. There will be daytime excursions to study Heath Fritillary and Large Blue. (Participants will be asked to help with transport).

SHROPSHIRE Preston Montford Field Centre

The centre stands within its own grounds flanked by a quiet stretch of the River Severn and containing good habitats for moths. Special locations within the area include Prees Heath, The Longmynd and Oswestry Uplands.

YORKSHIRE Malham Tarn Field Centre

The Centre stands high up in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in a peaceful woodland setting beneath dramatic cliffs and overlooking Malham Tarn. The centre buildings are Georgian or Victorian in origin and recent refurbishments have improved accommodation and facilities significantly. Moth species could include Haworth's Minor, Confused, Anomalous, Red Carpet and Gold Spangle. There will be a visit to Arnside Knott to study High Brown Fritillary and Scotch Argus.

DORSET Kingcombe Centre
Kingcombe Centre nestles in a remote west Dorset valley in the peaceful hamlet of Lower Kingcombe.
Electric light traps will be operated each night at the centre which is surrounded by Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve. On the July course there will be field visits to Lulworth and Giant Hill, Cerne Abbas to study chalk downland butterflies and day flying moths. The October course will focus on Blair’s Wainscot plus visits to coastal location including Studland, Swanage and Portland.
